I’ve never fished like that. Would he have been strapped to his line/pole such that he couldn’t disengage once he went overboard?

It’s possible. There’s a video on YouTube where a big tuna pulled the fisherman (seat and all) out of the pedestal into the water.

I’m not a big fisherman, but have fought a few tuna. An 80 lb tuna is a very powerful fish that will Kick Your Butt. I was never strapped in, but was close to letting go of the rod a couple of times. I don’t go into the ocean. It’s dangerous.

Most likely tangle in line. Or, He was simply exhausted. I have fished like that. A big fish will take hour of fighting sometimes.

One of the dangers of catching really powerful fish, like tuna and marlin, is they can run towards the boat early giving slack in the line. Tuna then love to dive down to the thermocline ( about 300ft) to colder water. If you get wrapped in the line when it comes toward the boat, then it dives, you’re dead.
