I’m trying to figure out if “the size of 20 million suns” is a measure of mass or volume.

That reference is typically used for stellar object size.

e.g., Red Giant (10x sun), Super Giant (100x sun), etc.

An AU (astronomical unit) is far larger than their observations (150 million km) for size reference.
