Sounds fair. A school team used to playing together could be considered elite over a "pick up" team.

In other words, the media saw a story they could use to promote their agenda, and so they ran with it ALL OVER THE COUNTRY without fact-checking it.

It must have been a combination of a very bad group of boys’ “elite” team(s) and an extremely good group of girls’ team for a girls’ basketball team to beat a boys’.

So the team is composed of "Ringers" - older, taller, more skilled than the teams they played against.
Happens all the time in youth sports. I guess it's the gender angle that makes it "news".
