Hospitalized for depression for five weeks?
Isn’t that unusual?
Is that evidence of a serious mental illness?

For a private payer, yes.

When I went into the hospital for my mental health I stayed a week and a half. That’s what most people stay.

And I might mention I have very good health insurance and my hospital stay was covered.

Yes it’s very unusual. Sounds like he must have been suicidally depressed.

Except for lifestyle changes, there are only 2 treatments for depression, meds and therapy. Neither required hospitalization.
There's no reason for hospitalization unless he is suicidal or unable to take care of himself day-to-day.
