My first car was a VW 1964 Bug, manual transmission. It was truly fun to drive. I taught my little sister how to drive it when she was 16.

My first two cars were automatic.
I thought it would be helpful to have a little experience before learning to drive a standard; however, I had more control with the standard. It was funny how guys were surprised that I knew how to drive one. I loved my truck and kept that for 25 years.
When the kids came along, we bought a automatic minivan. On those days when the van was in the shop, I would hop into the truck. It was like riding a bike. You never forget.

My first car was a 1959 Karman Ghia. Four on the floor with overdrive. My family bought it used in 1966.
I wonder when driver’s ed stopped training on manual transmissions?

My father taught me how to drive a stick when I was 9 years old. He use to let me drive a 1968 Volkswagen Bug around the neighborhood to deliver newspapers on cold winter mornings. I remember we were driving home one day and the car felt like it hit a big pothole. We saw one of the wheels roll past the car. Something broke and caused the wheel to fall off. My older brother took the car off road the night before. My father wanted to kick his ass.
