Time machines, though fictional, could be made, but would not be practical.
Let’s say you have one that actually works.
You program it to go back or forward in time by one second.
It works.
You instantly die.
Why?
Because the Universe and everything in it is in motion.
The Earth is rotating on its axis, and is revolving around the Sun.
The Sun and all its retinue of planets, various moons, asteroids, comets and dust are in motion orbiting around the Milky Way Galaxy’s black hole at its center.
The galaxy it self is in motion in some direction away from the ‘center’ of the Universe.
The entire Universe is expanding.
So in that ONE SECOND, forward or backward, you wind up in empty space! Or, if you’re very UNLUCKY the middle of a star somewhere and are instantly vaporized.
So, time travel may be possible, but would be quite unpractical...............

And that’s just ONE reason...................
Another reason is you and the machine itself are made of atoms of various elements that may or may not have existed at the time of your choosing.
You cannot introduce mass into a Universe that already exists or does not yet exist......................

You do know, of course, that you are a time machine.
You just move forward in one direction—very slowly.

Time travel depends on everything already existing at the same time—past, present, future—and then the machine is just a way to move around....
The concept is like a reel of film.
The film is already made—but if you were a character in the film you just play your part—the time traveler can see any part of the film at any time, in any order.
Whether that is actually how the universe works—I have no clue—but imho the critics of time travel have no clue either.
When I was in school, there were two theories of the universe, one being expanding and the other steady state. The big bang is just man’s feeble attempt to explain the unexplainable. The observed “expansion” of the universe is due to a defect in the speed of light (it can be deflected by gravity: thus it has mass) causing far off object to appear that they are traveling away from us at an ever increasing rate. My money is on steady state.
LOL. Is that before or after “The Bang”?
Where I used to work, we had a RF Screen room where I tested electronics devices without interference from other RF sources.
It was essentially a big metal box about 10 ft cubed, and walls to inches thick and grounded.
Once the door was closed no signals in or out.
I put a sign on the front door:

TIME MACHINE!
ONCE YOU ENTER YOU WILL EXIT IN THE FUTURE!
ONE WAY TRIPS ONLY!

Now I wanna’ know what came before the “pre” big bang event.
Yeah. And where did Universe -1 come from? Science still doesn’t know where the energy came from to squeeze the entire Universe into a hot, dense state in a ball the size of a pea.
