The Monthly Create, Make and Share Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love to create and make. From yarn (crochet, knitting), fabric (sewing, quilting), threads (embroidery, weaving), wood crafts, ceramics, artwork and anything else you create and would like to share, this is the place to do it. Sharing something you’ve created and/or made is pure joy...and we need joy in our lives!
From complete Newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced artists, we would love to hear from you. If you have questions or would like advice, there’s probably someone on the thread who would be able to help.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Create, Make and Share Thread. Knitting, crochet, sewing, quilting, weaving, general crafting, art, wood working, patterns, articles on any of these topics, or even your own writing. Today I play the piano for my past self who was working hard in long haul trucking to earn the time and place to be musical. These songs were learned by ear and arranged for piano my myself. The truck recording is from 2015. The piano performance is from 2023 and was recorded with a '90's Korg synthesizer.

It’s not like I don’t have enough WIPs already, but ‘things’ just come up & sometimes in clusters. We seem to be having a lot of new widows at church, several of whom are friends of my mom. There are 3. Two I also personally want to do prayer shawls for & mom wants one for a 3rd person.
I have the yarn - issues with patterns. I don’t have enough for one beautiful pattern because it “eats” yarn. I am crocheting rather than knitting - worked up the pattern to see how far I could get & definitely would need to buy more yarn.
There is another pattern that I have done quite a few shawls in using Lion Brand Homespun which is what the pattern calls for (now $9 per 185 yd skein & I use 3-4 skeins - ouch!). I an using Caron Jumbo Ombre @ 595 yds & on paper, that should be enough for a 3 skein Homespun shawl. Two of the widows are quite petite, one is more robust in stature. The Ombre colors really work up in an attractive way.
I should finish one shawl in the 2nd pattern today so I’ll know where I stand - do I need more yarn or will this pattern work out & be large enough .... I don’t like ‘skimpy’ shawls!
I did something like that years ago, but then my eyes got too bad (hereditary cataracts) and by the time I’d had cataract surgery, I had lost almost all interest in counted cross stitch.
However, I sent the link to my daughter who is absolutely addicted to it!!
There is so much more now to work with in organizing anything!

I’m one of the lucky few. I got cataracts at an early age, and my doctor suggested that I get the new multi focal lens permanently inserted when he removed the cataracts. So I have new “eyes” as of 3 years ago. I’ll never have to wear glasses again, and can see the small stuff better than I had in 10 years! I’m a happy, happy girl!
Great idea. I have done a bit of wood burning over the years, usually fish art mostly on bark edged planks. Many of you might enjoy this article on stinging nettle. I took a friend and his grand children to the Seip mound (Hopewell Indian) complex in southern Ohio and told the kids to stay away from the stinging nettle. To realize nettle could have been used to make textiles was interesting.

Yeah, I did that too, but it was about 10-12 years ago. I need reading glasses, but when I was first diagnosed (late 40’s) cataract surgery wasn’t an option for me.
Once I had the surgery, though, I raved about my ability to see so much that my older sister finally opted for it!
The problem even then was astigmatism. It was so severe in both eyes that I had to wait for technology.
I love being able to see without hunting for my glasses before I can even get out of bed!

I’m lucky, no astigmatism. I love not having to wear glasses. I’ve waited most of my life for this turn of events. Now to keep them healthy.

Lots of “water over the dam” since my last post ... or maybe I should say ‘yarn across the hook/needle’!
I finished the crocheted shawl (i.e. used up the skein of yarn) & the size is ‘marginal’. Not only that, but in the non-fuzzy/super soft yarn (as opposed to Homespun), the shawl seems heavy & clunky .... not something you would or could snuggle in. I like my prayer shawls to give the recipient the thought that they are getting a warm hug when they snuggle up in one. A friend of mine, dying from cancer, got a prayer ‘afghan’ from me - he was over 6 feet so I made it extra large. The very last time I saw him, he pulled me aside from the group of friends we were with to tell me every time he wrapped up in that afghan, he felt like he was getting a hug from me ... that is what I’m after.
So, I tried two knitting patterns with the yarn ... both were open work/lacy. I didn’t like either. I ended up with a 3rd pattern that is pretty much the same as the one for knitting a washcloth. I have a 5 stitch border, a yarn over, then the body is being done in stockinette stitch. The Caron Jumbo is a fairly soft yarn and with the lighter knit ‘fabric’, it is going to be something the recipient can snuggle up in . The issue is how much yarn it’s going to take - one skein is not enough.
Today it’s back to Joanne’s ... returning two skeins in colors I can’t use & getting more yarn in the color that I’m knitting up (”Blush & Blue”). Online, one of the stores in the area has 3 skeins in stock - hope that’s accurate! I’ll post pics when the shawl is done - I REALLY like it so far and it’s likely going to be my “go to” prayer shawl knitting pattern - very simple, but accomplishes what I want it to be.

Scroll down to where it says “If you want to knit a border, you need to knit a transition triangle at the beginning like this:”
The picture of the beginnings of a shawl with a knitted border & stockinette stitch is directly above the directions. As mentioned before, I expanded my border to 5 stitches (garter stitch) & I like that much better than 3 - the stockinette stitch wants to “roll” so the top edge will also have a 5 row garter stitch border.
