Neil Diamond says he’s only recently learned to accept his Parkinson’s disease.
His diagnosis in 2018 prompted an immediate cancellation of a planned tour, and the announcement that no more road trips would take place. He’s performed briefly on a handful of occasions since then, but in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning to be aired tomorrow (April 2), he explained he’d been in denial for at least two years.
“I don't like it,” Diamond, 82, said. “But… this is me; this is what I have to accept. And I’m willing to do it. And, okay, so this is the hand that God’s given me, and I have to make the best of it, and so I am.” Asked when he’d come to accept the situation he replied: “I think this has just been in the last few weeks. But somehow, a calm has moved [into] the hurricane of my life, and things have gotten very quiet… And I like it. I find that I like myself better. I’m easier on people. I’m easier on myself. And the beat goes on, and it will go on long after I'm gone.”
Elsewhere in the chat, he was asked how he felt about A Beautiful Noise, the Broadway play based on his life. “It was all pretty hard – I was a little embarrassed; I was flattered, and I was scared,” he admitted. “Being found out is the scariest thing you can [face], because we all have a facade. And the truth be known to all of ‘em. I’m not some big star. I’m just me.”

I know people who know Neil Diamond and all I can say is take care and God Bless.
I saw an interview with him the other night and thought he looked ill. My prayers go with him, my brother in law has Parkinsons and he’s only 50 and his passion was painting which he can no longer do. But don’t worry folks: We are heading light speed towards 3rd world status which obviously produces better science and research
Accept it or not, he still has it. Its not great, but it’s manageable and not fatal. It’s something you die with and not from.
Terrific voice and writer.
God bless him.
If he needs help, think of Katherine Hepburn. It didn’t stop her.
A solitary man. God bless you, frien.d
Yes, one of my favorite.
Wish him courage in his struggle.
Everyone should listen to Neil’s mid-2000s album, “12 Songs.” It has assistance from Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from the Heartbreakers, as well as Billy Preston and (memorably) Brian Wilson, providing some gorgeous harmonies. It’s a gem, and Neil is fantastic.

Sweet, crackling Rosie. Long live.
Try this one. Neil with Brian Wilson. In a just, music-forward world, this is a MASSIVE hit!

He said to no one there.
My brother-in-law also has Parkinson’s. His wife passed away almost 10 years ago. He’s in his 70s. He’s in assisted living now and uses a walker. It’s sad to see him like that.
I was a Neil Diamond fan in the 70s and 80s. I still love his music.
I love his soundtrack from Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The movie not so much, but the music is wonderful.
It’s sad to see.
Indeed. On a Hot August Night.
Great album...’tree people’.
“Sweet Caroline” will be be eternally magic. Thank you Neil.
“All you tree people”🙂
Saw him at the Cow Palace. Opened up with “Desiree”. He knew how to swung his hips in a minor, sultry way. Then there’s the glittery shirts. Just had to end with Brother Love. A real storyteller.
I saw what you did there!
