“..the boy had been PLAYING WITH THE DOG ALL DAY LONG..”

The dog may have passed his puppy stage a long time ago, but still remembers how to play games with people, but at some point, the dog may have had enough running and fetching and hearing his name yelled out. Somebody should have said,
“OK, Junior, you’ve been playing with Prince for the last hour and a half. Time to give Prince a break for today and do something else.”

Some dogs don’t know how to refuse a “Come and Fetch!” command from anybody, not even from a child.
The animal doesn’t hear a request, they hear a command to obey.

You can safely assume that any breed might turn on a child. Just that some breeds are more likely to turn on a human.

1. A child may not be part of the pack or new to the pack. Pecking order is not established yet.

2. A child will not understand that you don’t stare a dog in the face. Or put your force your face next to theirs. There are canine social rules that can be misinterpreted as a threat or a challenge.

3. A child may treat the dog as a stuffed animal not realizing that it is a living being with temperament.

“Maybe the dog was trying to get its life back together and was an aspiring rapper?”

Or perhaps the kid called the dog an NPC.

Unethical pit breeding is mainly the cause for the unprovoked viciousness — the bad lines/genetics should be identified and culled through attrition/sterilization

Then when you're done with the breeders do the same with the dogs.

“+1 — the effects of social media“

I read where over 20 million dogs were introduced to American households during the covid period alone.

Meanwhile the birth rate in the US has plunged to 1.6. Well below the replacement rate.

We are replacing babies with dogs. Sorry I should have said “fur babies”.

What the hell happened to our country?

Ya. A bite on the face is probably more common than people realize. Usually it is minor and the dog is punished and the parents learn to be careful.

I hope the family can move on. What a terrible tragedy. Personally I avoid shitbulls at all cost. You just never know in life, why add another possibility.

Unprovoked. People don’t realize that eye contact can be provocation to dogs. I had a cat that pulled it on my pit all the time, then ran like hell for an open window. Big fun.

Owning a pit bull should not be taken lightly. Some cities and towns have banned the breed. You also may face rising insurance rates or cancellation of your policy, difficulty renting, and the watchful eye of neighbors and passersby. However, the ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and some other groups have recommend against breed-specific laws. They cite a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Association on Sept. 15, 2000. “It has gotten much better for the dogs,” Sacey Coleman, executive director of the Animal Farm Foundation Inc., a Bangall, N.Y. pit bull advocacy group says. “People have seen that these dogs are out there and deserve help right now.”

Pamela Reid, vice president of the ASPCA’s Animal Behavior Center in New York says many things can lead to a tendency toward aggression. That includes breeding dogs for protection, dog fighting, social status, or financial gain. Abuse, neglect, chaining, tethering, and inadequate obedience training and supervision also make the list.

So pit bulls are high maintenance animals. It should be taken into consideration when adopting one that they will need that extra training and supervision to remain within the family safely.

Lots of folks shouldn’t have a dog that weighs more than 5 pounds that isn’t spayed or neutered. Basically a stuffed animal that eats and poops.

Sickening and mortifying. Now they’ve lot their son forever. God bless this poor little boy and I pray he’s in God’s hands, safe and sound.

I can’t believe the dumb SHIT people do with kids. Sure, by all means, let your 2 year old run around with a pit bull all day.

These people need to be put away for their stupidity and utter neglect.

In addition, socialization is critical. Pups removed from a litter too young, as shade-tree breeders will do, are not going to be good dogs.
