You can debate civil service laws on firing, but Trump had full control over who was invited to meetings, put on air, and whose advice to follow.

Trump opposed lockdowns and vaccine mandates. But, any President was going to push to get a vaccine out.
The media was already in full kill them all and let God sort them out mode. To say they would have been worse is to imply they weren’t already trying to be as bad as bad could be.
They would have buried him on covid.
As it is, they dinged his brand pretty good in the run-up to the 2020 "election".
