witnessed knife attacks, a deadly fentanyl overdose, customers trying to defecate on the floor, and other chaos,

I predict the mafia will make a comeback. As leftists make cities ungovernable, people will seek protection for their livelihoods elsewhere. Unfortunately, next time it won't be Catholic Italians, like in the movies.

The "protection racket" that the mafia used to run in the big cities was portrayed in media and movies as a "shake-down" of innocent business owners, as in "nice business you got here, be a shame if anything happened to it." - and in many ways it was indeed a shakedown conducted by plug-ugly mobsters.

Generally speaking however, you did get the protection you paid for. If anybody vandalized your business or stole from you while you were making your "monthly payments", chances are that the mob would do something about it fairly quickly. Perpetrator's legs would get broken and they probably would never be seen again in that neighborhood.
