Folk singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian icon who Bob Dylan once referred to as a "rare talent," passed away in Toronto on Monday. Lightfoot was 84 years old. Representative Victoria Lord confirmed that Lightfoot died at a Toronto hospital early Tuesday morning, but did not elaborate on his cause of death. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quick to offer tribute to the musician on Twitter.

My wife’s Dad used to play the 45 of the Wreck of the Edmund…over and over. So much so she now can’t stand the song but I think it’s because she didn’t like her Dad so much

What a lot of memories when ever I think of his songs. Loved listening to them on the radio when I was 18. A great chapter of my life scored by Gordon Lightfoot.
He was an epic talent with both musical and storytelling gifts. There can be no one who surpassed Gordon Lightfoot. We see the Edmond Fitzgerald happen as if we are eyewitnesses to history. May God recieve Gordon into His heavenly kingdom.
Maybe a little humor to blunt the sadness of his passing. A good singer.
I’m not familiar with his entire catalog, and honestly, I’ve heard Edmund Fitzgerald enough times in my life that I’m slightly weary of hearing it.
But I have to admit that several of his songs seem to be near once-in-a-generation combinations of a great melody, combined with poignant lyrics with an excellent arrangement/production that are a perfect match to his vocal range. I think If You Could Read My Mind is one of those that could be used as a master class in songwriting or producing or arranging.
