Beyond their capabilities?

2 of these horses collapsed. That implies internal problems, heart or circulation.

2 of them “broke down” albeit it’s unclear if one actually broke down and the other fell and then was injured by it.

It’s possible for those 2 horses, something is wrong with the track. But the truth is this is no different than what has been going on for centuries. 2yos have been run for centuries, horses have been run hard every few days for centuries, and in truth not many actually suffer these fates.

This and Laurel could be a complete chance.
