I never understood “it is what it is.” WTF IS IT ? dammit !
Whomever uttered the phrase obviously didn’t know or couldn’t explain it,... unless they were just admitting they were clueless.
I am guilty of using “it is what it is”.
The context is when someone is denying blatant reality that they don’t like—and you are delivering the bad news.
The Ayn Rand formulation is better—but longer:
“You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.”
