Clinical study: Medicinal cannabis is a 'life-changing treatment' for people with Tourette syndrome (Oral THC or CBD both worked)
Medical Xpress / University of Sydney / NEJM Evidence ^ | June 9, 2023 | Philip E. Mosley et al

Australian researchers have published the first robust clinical study proving that medicinal cannabis effectively treats the debilitating effects of Tourette syndrome.

The findings show a statistically and clinically significant reduction in motor and vocal tics in just six weeks.

The analysis found a significant association between levels of cannabis in the bloodstream and the response to active treatment.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the active hallucinogenic compound in cannabis that produces a "high" effect, while CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound. Both are used medicinally in Australia.

The study involved testing 22 adult patients with severe Tourette symptoms. In the double-blind study, participants received both medicinal cannabis oil and a placebo over two six-week blocks.

"It shows that medicinal cannabis can reduce tics by a level that makes a life-changing difference for people with Tourette syndrome and their families."

"In addition, we found that other symptoms associated with Tourette syndrome in our participants also reduced, particularly symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety."

Tourette syndrome affects about one percent of the population and is four times more common in men than women. The neurological disorder often begins in childhood and is characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations, or tics.

"Cannabis interacts with specific receptors on nerve cells in the brain that are part of the body's own 'endocannabinoid' system," Dr. Mosley said.

"Effectively, stimulation of these receptors tightens a leaky filter that now stops the involuntary movements and vocalizations from getting out and being expressed by our participants."

Medicinal cannabis is available on prescription to approved patients. Patients are unable to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery while using the medication that is typically taken orally, in small doses, several times a day.

It appears the non-psychoactive form worked as well.

It’s good to note it is not legal to use the drug and drive, in Australia.

How coincidental that the most popular recreational non-alcoholic drug just happens to ostensibly cure practically every medical malady. Apparently no other non-intoxicating substance found in nature is this miraculous. Amazing. Now flame away!

As one who was in the industry ( manufacturing extraction equipment) I have seen first hand medical conditions treated well with CBD and THC. It was an amazing treatment for epilepsy and uncontrollable spastic disorders. Personally, I have used it for debilitating migraine headaches. I have also seen mild THc doses work well for treating drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. There are legit medical uses for weed. But... Most people just want to get high.

Really good weed is good for just about everybody.

Like all things, in moderation.

OK all you nasty blended Scotch drinkers without a leg to stand on, let ‘er rip.

It does work for Tourette. Not saying nothing else will. But it does dramatically reduce tics.

My youngest son had a school mate that had strong Tourettes. He joined out Cub Scout pack thirty years ago and I had an educational meeting with the boys and their dads prior to his joining. I explained how difficult it was to live with, how involuntary and how important it was for us all to have supportive friends.

The next three years he had a team of supporters. His life at school totally changed. When he was about fifteen his dad got transferred. He came to see me and told me how profound the difference was due to his involvement with the rest of the boys and what it had meant to him and his family. I was humbled and every time I hear of Tourettes I want to share this opportunity.
