Left out of the story, of course, is that this is, obviously, hate crime committed on an Asian woman, her baby and husband by a black convicted felon, with a stolen gun.
His race was not mentioned, so we assume the killer was black. (A safe assumption.)
This means that is was not a hate crime, but an isolated incident committed by a man suffering from mental illness.
