I can’t think of a sadder and more depressing place to go to die.
6100 psi at 12,000 feet of water...
Anyone who has scuba dived knows that the increase in pressure is extremely rapid as one descends and any dive is inherently risky. Hence the “buddy system”. Never dive alone. The slow descent into the cold and pitch black at the depth of the Titanic is a whole different order of magnitude and would be terrifying in and of itself. Submarining isn’t for amateurs.
“No strength in compression”. My retired-engineer alarms went off the moment I read that this vehicle was made that way. Even a freshman proto-engineer knows this, before he’s taken his first Strength of Materials course. What was that guy thinking? Compression strength of carbon composites comes entirely from the matrix resin, which frankly isn’t even close to that of steel.
Sadly, I think you are correct. When this sub thing was going on there were news reports all over the place. Just think, an exciting sub rescue effort associated with the Titanic. It drew people like flies to dog crap. One huge distraction from any real story with meat in it.
I have a feeling when it’s all over, the Biden Crime Family will make the Clinton Crime Family look like choir boys. However to the left the biggest demons on Earth was Nixon until Trump came along.
The only good out of this sub story is that one rich white self loathing guy that hates 50 year old white guys is dead, super dead, as in imploding to the point his body dieseled and is no nothing but ash mixed with trillions of gallons of water.
Unfortunately he took four others with him. May they RIP.
The only equipment needed was a skiff with a wreath to toss.
Perhaps someone else can find how many actual dives it made.
I watch a lot of the shows about these little manned HOV subs that go to great depths. Even though they are built to the best standards possible (NOAA), you can still hear them popping as they go deeper. I wouldn’t even go down in one of those.
Now we are hearing that the Navy knew the sub had imploded on SUNDAY but started this charade to give the Democrat/communist controlled media a bright shinny object to distract from the impending collapse of Crime Boss Joey The Sniff’s criminal empire.
These are low life disgusting swine that must never be allowed to rule our lives again.
Bad design, James...................
Isn't it weird? We grew up in a world where a Billionaire (or the equivalent) was someone who had spent years/decades carefully building a fortune. The new economy just craps out idiots that got it by accident. Mark Cuban springs to mind.
I will suggest that the problem is interturf bureaucratic dithering.
The coast Guard had the lead and the Coast Guard is Department of Homeland Securtiry. The implosion is said to be heard by the Military or the Department of Defense.
The event happened in international waters.
Perhaps the State Department thus became involved.
Dithering bureaucrats just could not act instantaneously
“Interestingly, the cheap logitech controller survived the implosion”
Link please
That sounds like a distinct possibility since he deliberately eschewed common sense safety procedures.
I watched the video of the making of the Titan.
I did not see any metal reinforcements inside the 5 inch thick ‘tube’ of carbon fiber. None at all.
The only metal was the Front Dome with window, which was made of titanium.
The two pieces were then GLUED TOGETHER!
A JOINT OF METAL AND CARBON FIBER AND ADHESIVE.
If the adhesive let go, and I am guessing, THIS is the part of the structure that failed.
Just like the Challenger Disaster and the rubber O Rings................
People will do anything to become famous. There was nothing of value to see though the lone 12” porthole in the sardine can in dark murky water. They went down there to have the badge of “adventurer.”
Exactly the same motivation that causes these great men to march up Mt. Everest and dozens of other “accomplishments”.
For my part, I applaud their demise at least to the extent that this discourages other “great men” to risk theirs and others lives and property for nothing more than the trophy.
With what the Navy presumably has in the realm of underwater detection, ASW and the like, it’s a good guess the initial delay in response is due to the Navy not wanting to show their hand... perhaps?
Stockton was not wealthy. Most of his career he was a pilot and engineer, which can pay fairly well but does not make one wealthy. He had some family money, but most of his wealth was tied up in OceanGate, which is now worthless. Two of the passengers on this sub were very wealthy, but Stockton was not.
Exactly, the materials had no rated endurance, they had no idea of the dive cycle limit for that vessel. Even worse, WAY worse CF is terrible for compressive stresses, it is best used in tensile stress applications. CF is bad enough to justify negligent incompetence on the part of whoever came up with the idea.
I am at the point where if they find Boeing and/or the University of Washington (UW) did indeed have a part in designing that sub as Stockton claimed, they need a good legal enema!
Interestingly both are now denying any part of designing that sub which Stockton claimed, in videos, they did design it.
Exactly! “Expert.” Does Cameron have physics and mechanical engineering degrees? I’m guessing no.
