The stupidity of this whole thing overwhelms me. A billionaire wasnt smart enough to make sure this thing could withstand the pressure.
I dont know jack about any thing related to diving or going underwater in a submarine but even I know you had better check if it can withstand pressure.. My grandfather was in the navy during one of the Wars and they had to go through all kinds of training .
Anyone who has scuba dived knows that the increase in pressure is extremely rapid as one descends and any dive is inherently risky. Hence the “buddy system”. Never dive alone. The slow descent into the cold and pitch black at the depth of the Titanic is a whole different order of magnitude and would be terrifying in and of itself. Submarining isn’t for amateurs.
Isn't it weird? We grew up in a world where a Billionaire (or the equivalent) was someone who had spent years/decades carefully building a fortune. The new economy just craps out idiots that got it by accident. Mark Cuban springs to mind.
People will do anything to become famous. There was nothing of value to see though the lone 12” porthole in the sardine can in dark murky water. They went down there to have the badge of “adventurer.”
Exactly the same motivation that causes these great men to march up Mt. Everest and dozens of other “accomplishments”.
For my part, I applaud their demise at least to the extent that this discourages other “great men” to risk theirs and others lives and property for nothing more than the trophy.
“but even I know you had better check if it can withstand pressure..
... and sustained over a large number of dive cycles. Titan had been to Titanic several times so it had demonstrated that it could withstand the pressure a few times. The fact it survived those few journeys doesn’t mean it could do it forever.
How many dive cycles could it withstand? We don’t know because apparently it was never fully and adequately tested for 3800 meters during development.
as my Mother used to tell me when I was little... "Just because someone has a LOT of MONEY doesn't mean they KNOW ANYTHING!"
“A billionaire wasnt smart enough to make sure this thing could withstand the pressure.“
This reminds me of the time The Beatles befriended a self-proclaimed “inventor” and he told them he could build them a beyond state of the art studio for them.
They were impressed by all his chatter, but when the time came, they found out that he had NO idea what he was doing. They had to have their old EMI staff rush in and rebuild a proper studio…
Mind you, no life and death was invoked there, unlike this whole submarine fiasco.
I’m guessing they hired some big talkers to build their sub for them…
I am as far away an engineer as it gets, but even I know that if you’re building something like that - potentially life threatening- you make prototypes to destroy every way you can possibly think of before the finial product.
Apparently, this guy couldn’t be bothered…
Wealthy people are some of the dumbest people on the planet.
Proving that money doesn’t always equate to brains and common sense.
