I thought that it was noisier than a dump truck full of banjos.

A gentleman is a fellow who can play the banjo but doesn’t.

As much as I love and use aphorisms myself, I still enjoy Ambrose Bierce's definition for the term, from
The Devil's Dictionary:
APHORISM, n. Predigested wisdom.
The flabby wine-skin of his brain
Yields to some pathologic strain,
And voids from its unstored abysm
The driblet of an aphorism.

I always found Ambrose Bierce amusing and interesting. Somehow I don’t think he suffered fools gladly. I wonder what would have happened if he and Clemens were trapped in an elevator. As far as I know no one really knows what became of him.

"As far as I know no one really knows what became of him." That wasn't uncommon in his day -- no phones, no widespread communications, no support. Folks who went off into the wilds (or even not so wilds) would never return and everyone who knew them would never know what happened.
That said, most popular rumor is that he ended up in front of one of Pancho Villa's many firing squads. ¡Viva Mexico!
