The moment Oppenheimer's star-studded cast went on strike: Emotional Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh lead stars making an early exit from the UK premiere as acting unions bring the industry to a halt

This is the moment the star-studded cast of Oppenheimer walked out of the film's UK premiere on Thursday as thousands of actors went on the biggest strike to hit Hollywood in 60 years.

Footage from the black carpet, which was brought forward by an hour to avoid clashing with the strike's announcement, showed the cast posing for photos together before making their way back to their hotel in London.

Stars including Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh were visibly emotional as they exited the premiere early, with the film's director Christopher Nolan later saying the cast had left the event to 'write their picket signs.'

Hollywood is set to grind to a halt for the forseeable future as unions take militant action over how streaming services are pushing down pay and the increasing use of AI in production.

The move could delay the release dates of blockbusters in the UK, with filming already halted today on the Buckinghamshire set of Wicked, starring Ariana Grande, while Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2 and Speak No Evil also face being pushed back.

The likes of Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Rami Malek were all on the red carpet at the Odeon in Leicester Square last night, before leaving prematurely to 'go and write their picket signs' in preparation for the 'imminent' strike by the actors' union.

Among the films affected by the Hollywood strikes is superhero blockbuster Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman - which may have its scheduled release date of May 2024 significantly impacted by the strike.

Similarly, new film Wicked starring US singer Ariana Grande, actress Cynthia Erivo, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, which is being shot in a village in Buckinghamshire could also be affected, as the release date is...

They will be missed. Still don't know who they are. Why aren't they wearing masks?

Striking for what?
More faggotry and interracial couples?
Just replace them with the waiters and waitresses in LA.
They’re just dying to get cast.

Are we supposed to care? The little fake people still getting their pictures taken on the carpet outside their loser movies before they strike. Who can like these people?

It was never clear to me what actual jobs in the film industry are actually in this union. Who is affected, what are the current terms, what is the request from the union, what has been the response, how is streaming and ai affecting the industry…?

A more comprehensive article is needed before I would understand.

Too much to ask?

Regarding ai, sounds like what other workers have been facing for years. Non-brick-and-mortar retail, automated manufacturing and warehousing, automated and out-sourced customer service…. Maybe these actors can become programmers…

Lawyers and actors. Their job is to lie for a living. I have little respect for them.

Saw Sound of Freedom yesterday (awesome movie/documentary, BTW), so I’m good to go for awhile.

We could all use a break from the mostly vile/useless garbage they put out anyway . . .

Dear movie makers. I’ll take any role that you have for Matt Damon. I’m the right age, smarter, better looking, a better actor and zero FAG (Film Actors Guild) factor. And don’t mind crossing idiotic union lines.

There is an oversaturation of content already out there.

Even if zero movies were made going forward, it would take a lifetime just seeing a fraction of what already has been produced.

Some Freepers have taken to posting links to old movies here which I really appreciate, as I'm amazed by the quality of motion pictures produced as far back as the 1940s.

I will never have time to see them all. It does not matter to me if another motion picture is never created again.

Sames goes for music too, by the way.

Two most profitable movies this year are Top Gun and Sound of Freedom.

“They will be missed”

Maybe not. With what is available for free on streaming maybe people will decide like “bud lite” there are better choices.

“saying the cast had left the event to ‘write their picket signs.’”

I don’t think so...they have “staff” for that kind of thing. Cue showing up at a picket line for a five minute photo-op to virtue signal. /s

One of my favorite movies from recent years: Shaun the Sheep The Movie

No actors. No dialogue.

But it's the best darn thing I've seen in years.

Hollywood never really recovered from the last writers strike (and they weren’t doing great even before then).

Right... the acting ‘industry’ is a joke. AS IF they produce life essentials!!

I don’t even know who those people are or why they matter.

Ditto for music. I’m still discovering stuff from the 60s and 70s I never heard before, and as they say, if you haven’t heard it before, it’s new to you.

If a bunch of spoiled brat actors and actresses whine, and no one is there to listen, do they still make a sound?
