AI thinks the Constitution was written by bots — but there’s a bigger issue

It’s “We the people,” not we the AI.

Computer language models are under the impression that the US Constitution — written way before the Internet in 1787 — is an AI-generated document.

The explanation is simple, according to Edward Tian, creator of AI writing catcher GPTZero, a service that also found the biblical book of Genesis to be 88% computerized.

“The US Constitution is a text fed repeatedly into the training data of many large language models,” he told Ars Technica.

“As a result, many of these large language models are trained to generate similar text to the Constitution and other frequently used training texts. GPTZero predicts text likely to be generated by large language models, and thus this fascinating phenomenon occurs.”

But this spells out a larger issue than just James Madison rolling over in his grave. It signifies a major problem in AI’s inability to differentiate computer-generated text from human at a time when college professors are quaking in fear over digital plagiarism.

The simple thing is to return to examinations written in longhand on the spot. Tradition to the rescue!

Just more proof of the maximum for every computer program: garbage in, garbage out.

The whole point of AI is that is mimics human responses. When AI is stupid, it's stupid like a human.

AI as it is currently implemented is a great interpolator of whatever garbage you feed it, but is a terrible extrapolator.

Aaron Burr starring in Bladerunner:1804 when he put down the replicant Hamilton. The Voight-Kampff test has a surprisingly large number of questions dealing with forming a national bank. And a childhood in the Caribbean was clearly an implanted memory.

AI appears to have trouble with categories. What is true and what is a lie. What requires math and what requires a creative verbal output. What is an actual, original document, and what is just part of the corpus it is fed.

And handwritten job applications performed in front of the hiring manager. It's surprising how many job applications are not filled out by the applicant they represent. It's a harsh revelation when the applicant isn't bright enough to even fill out the application...nevermind performing the job duties it requires.

AI has problems with units as well. Ask the area in square feet of a rectangle 25 yards long and 10 meters wide. Math and units are not a strong suit.
