A Mi-26 helicopter has an accident by crashing into a lighting pole at Yakutsk air base, causing its tail to fall off.

The Pole should have stayed in Poland.
Yeah, it looks like one of the three-step gags that Wile E. would have subjected himself to.
I think his driver’s permit will be revoked for awhile.
Seems to be happening a lot lately.
I’m guessing the tail broke off because of failure of the tail rotor drive shaft caused by sudden shock loads on the main rotor that would have resulted from impact of main rotor with the rigid pole.
Sudden changes in RPM of the tail rotor drive shaft interacted with the inertia of the tail rotor, rupturing the drive shaft and tearing the tail off the helicopter.
I believe you are correct. It’s the pole’s accuracy in then nailing the chopper, right on the main rotor shaft, that seals the deal. That gearbox is scrap.
Not much sense putting a torque-limiting coupling in a tail rotor shaft, no matter how expensive the helicopter is.
It was easy for Putin to seize power because he wasn't drunk. Everyone around him was drunk (Boris Yeltsin).
As the main rotor chews further into the pole — or should I say the pole chews further into the rotor — a big chunk of one of the main rotor blades breaks off and flies directly into the tail rotor.
That's what causes the damage, although I still think there's a shock load failure of the main rotor shaft.
Holeee sheetski...moore wadka...
Oopsky or Oopski?
It’s not like they had no ramp space...
This looks more like CGI/animation than an actual collision, at least to me. There’s something about the scale that looks off. And I’ve unfortunately seen a helicopter (MH-60) collide with a stationary object (another, unoccupied MH-60) and this vid doesn’t show anything like the debris generated by a real collision. Just my $.02.
Kinda like the f35 idiot that ejected over the deck of an aircraft carrier huh?
Why would there be tall poles at the edge of a landing/takeoff pad?
Why did that one guy on foot show no appropriate reaction to the crash that sent pieces flying past him?
I think this is CGI or video game footage which was intentionally degraded to make it seem authentic.
Either way, the pole coming right down on what’s left of the main rotor is the coup de grace.
They are light poles. You think the Russians don’t do night ops?
The pad is huge — I assume the pavement extends out to the poles for ease of vehicles moving around landed craft and so on. Obviously you want the lights fairly close to what’s going on... Really, the design is not terribly different from the pad at one of our local hospitals, just way bigger!
What’s an appropriate reaction? The best bet, unless / until a piece of chopper is coming right at you (if you even have time to dodge), IS TO STAND STILL. (Think about it.)
They light football fields and racetracks without having the poles right next to the action. I know people think Russians are stupid, but come on.
He stood still with his arms at his side. A NATURAL (better word) human reaction would involving flinching and raising arms.
Why would there be just one guy all by his lonesome, and why didn’t he try to guide the chopper away from the pole?
