The 501st were clones. Storm Troopers wrere replaced by clones as the emperor thought they were too costly and untrustworthy—that is, unwilling to do anything for him that was immoral. Many clones were killed for this.
The 501st still existed, the clones were replaced by volunteers and conscripts. They were called “Vader’s Fist”.
