Yeah, they were indeed fags, they killed babies they deemed unfit for various reasons by leaving them out on the hillside to die. They sneaked and murdered Helot slaves for training etc. They were certainly not defending anything sane people would see as freedom. Individual liberty was a concept utterly unknown to them.
Spartans have turned into a cartoon today. But they were essentially a slave state, nobody had anything resembling freedom, and were probably fairly close to Communist China overall.

Actually no; the author is wrong... A standout characteristic of the Axis Alliance might be militarism but while all Nazi's were Fascists not all Fascists were Nazi's. Spain, under Fransisco Franco, was a Fascist state but was not militaristic and was a neutral country during ww2. Far too many people, even presumed experts on the subject, have no idea what Fascism is really about...

Sparta was a society in which a certain class of ultra-militarized abused and utterly dominated the rest of society. Despite sacrificing every other good in society to military domination, they weren’t uniquely militarily effective; they were no stronger than Athens until the Persians joined them. To say that since other cultures owned slaves, to call Sparta Fascist is to call all the other slave-owning cultures fascist is a reductio ad absurdum on top of a straw man.

So why does this author oppose someone pointing out that the Spartan might wasn’t all that?
