For those who were not lucky enough to have experienced Lahaina, now wiped out by fire, this may help give you a sense of how idyllic that place was, and how lovely its people.
Lahaina is a very special place to my family as well. We travel to Hawaii basically every year and Maui has always been my favorite. I don’t know how many birthdays or anniversaries we’ve celebrated there, but every one was special. Heartbreaking to see what has happened.

We have a watercolor painting of Lahaina from an ocean view.
I recall going to Cheeseburgers in Paradise for one of their burgers with a thick slab of sweet Maui onion. That was 40 or so years ago.
Watching the video made me tear up... I did read the big Banyan may survive.
Thank you so very much for the video . Have family on Maui and this was a favorite place to visit….SAD !
I am not buying the official explanation. Dry conditions ? It’s an island in the middle of the ocean surrounded by warm water.
Last time I visited Maui was by bringing our 4Runner over from Oahu on the Super Ferry.
Of course, Maui groups were among the many that fought to kill the Super Ferry, and why I refuse to ever visit there again.
Endless lines of tourists in rental cars wherever you went.
Nice -thanks for posting !
we were there for a lovely lunch on a day trip.
I cannot believe what happened.
My favorite memory of lahinia was walking out of the Maui outlets on front street and out front was a young kama’aina guy was sitting playing his acoustic guitar .
(In Seattle it was common for street musicians to be playing with an open guitar case for donations.)
So I thought he was a kama’aina street musician, so I pull a $5 bill out to donate and since there was no case I waited till he was done with the melody he was playing and walked up and stuck it in the sound hole.
He started laughing and asked me
” why you do that brah ? “
Then I realized he was just some guy playing his guitar on front street
So embarrassing/-)
I said I thought he was a street musician like in Seattle..
He laughed again and said he was just waiting on a freind to meet up with ,,
I said I liked the song and hoped I didn’t offend him , that his performance was worth $5 to me and that I wanted him to have it cuz I enjoyed listening to him.
Later that day I saw him at a waterfall out Hanna way that people go swimming at. He points me out to his friends and says “ there’s that guy I told you about” and they and I started laughing . he came and talked with me for a few minutes and I felt really at home talking to him and a lot less like a tourist, almost felt like a kama’aina myself.
God bless the people of Maui.
That’s an American city? Where are all the homeless???
Oh,, shameless plug for a dive shop i hope survived .
on the south side of lahinia there is a dive shop on the waterline,,
the shop has a patented snorkel design they sell that makes breathing much more efficient and easier to breath through
( I won’t give the design away, I’ll just say that you aren’t inhaling half the exhale you just exhaled that is still in the uptube,, it really works.)
Thank you for that beautiful video. I want to remember Lahaina that way.
I can’t watch. It’s just too sad.
Thanks for that video. Been to Maui many times and Lahaina was always a favorite spot. The last time we were there was right before the pandemic. We took my daughter and her family to dinner at Fleetwood’s. My grandson who is a foodie had a memorable dinner. I texted him today that the restaurant was totally ruined. He still remembered what a great meal he had, actually, we all did.
So sad. Such a wonderful town.
