This Lightbulb Was Switched On In 1901 — And It’s Still Going

At more than one million hours of use and counting, this bulb proves that they really don't make things like they used to.

The Centennial Bulb, as this light has come to be known, is the longest-lasting light bulb of all time. It has been burning continuously since 1901, excluding a short interval in 1976 when the bulb was disconnected from electricity for 22 minutes while the firestation was moved to a different location.

Light bulbs make me think of Fred Upton, which makes me think of Kate Upton.

I have two light bulbs in my master bedroom closet that are 22 years old. I find that amazing.

By golly, you’re right. I guess it’s only a matter of time until some greenie smashes this wasteful old light bulb.

I light bulb that is never switched off has less wear and tear. It also has a sturdier fulfillment. Our businesses have no reason to make things that last. When people think of pollution, they should consider all those companies who make things designed to break. They are the biggest polluters.

But I don’t believe it has never been off. Our electric grid is not that perfect anywhere. So its been off. Maybe its never been turned off but it can’ have been on the whole time.

With that kind of history, the owners really oughta put a cage around it.

Guy walks thru the room with a ladder, his buddy hollers at him, he turns quickly ... OOPS !

It does not look like that bulb is powered by the intended voltage.
Most incandescent bulbs could last for a century on a voltage that barely makes it glow.

It’s not how long a bulb has remained lit that causes it to die. It’s the turning off and on.

Most bulbs go out at the instant they are turned on.

Vibration is not their friend. Can’t be too near a subway station I presume. Surprised the vacuum has held for more than a century.

I read somewhere that they cut the current to that bulb way back decades ago. Now the filament barely glows, and yes, it’s to make it last longer.

Right. A cold light bulb filament has a low electrical resistance (compared to the same filament when warm). So the initial current through it is high. It’s that high initial jolt of current that eventually destroys the filament.

Why do light bulbs make you think of Upton? Was he a leader in the banning incandescent bulbs? Just curious. I think I get the jump to Kate, though.
