Is Americans’ Love Affair With NATO Alliance Over? I&I/TIPP Poll
Issues & Insights ^ | 30 Oct, 2023 | Terry Jones

Whether it’s the Russia-Ukraine war, or the Israeli-Hamas war, NATO remains a big part of U.S. decision-making. Indeed, the U.S.-led postwar alliance has lasted 75 years, and it’s fair to say that nearly everything the U.S. does overseas involves NATO, directly or indirectly. But increasingly, average Americans are uneasy about the alliance, the latest I&I/TIPP Poll shows.

A significant number of Americans, though not yet a majority, feel the burdens of the U.S.’ NATO leadership as unfairly distributed, according to the online I&I/TIPP Poll of 1,378 adults taken from Sept. 27-29

The first question was elemental: “Does the U.S. participation in NATO increase or decrease the likelihood of U.S. getting involved in a military conflict?”

A surprising plurality of 38% answered “increase,” while 15% responded “decrease” and 19% said “no impact.” Another 28% said “not sure,” making it the second-largest answer. The poll has a margin of error of +/-2.7 percentage points.

This was the rare question in which political affiliation didn’t make too much of a difference. While 34% of Democrats said NATO raises the chance of war, that response wasn’t too far below the Republicans (44%) or independents (38%).

Lol….let’s drag NATO into a proxy war vs Russia in Ukraine, drain their military stockpiles, ruin their economies, set them against each other …..then cut them loose as “ dangerous to our security” and toss Ukraine to them like Charlie Brown’s football

Maybe my grandmother had a “love affair” with NATO. But she died in 1977

As far as I am concerned the only countries/areas the US should be protecting and insuring remain free are Canada, Mexico and the Pacific around Hawaii.
Protecting trade routes within X miles if CONUS for imports and exports is okay.
This crap of financing alliances, defending third world sh!t holes that won’t defend themselves and buying friends has got to stop,
You’re either with US or against US.

Now that the Soviet Union has fallen, we need to ask what the purpose of NATO is.

Is it just an anti-Russian alliance?

If so, you can understand why Russia was concerned with NATO slowly expanding eastward.

We might say “NATO would never attack Russia”, but Russia has a long history of being attacked by its neighbors to the west. I don’t just mean WWI & WWII, I mean going back hundreds of years. It has happened over and over and over again. It’s not surprising they are paranoid about it.

What percentage of Americans, under 40, know what NATO is?
What percentage can name the majority of countries in NATO?

We might say “NATO would never attack Russia”,

NATO is attacking Russia as we speak. Those aren't Ukraine HIMARS and ATACMS hitting Russian cities and airbases.

Imagine if Mexico were launching Chinese missiles on Tinker or Ellsworth airbases, or on Omaha Nebraska, while they attempted to get back Texas.

NATO was obsolete when the Soviet Union fell apart. The core purpose disappeared. That was 30 years ago - a generation.

The US needs to ‘graduate’ from NATO, retain some emeritus status, and let the Europeans manage the organization.

This would disengage the US from direct involvement with Europe’s quarrels and allow the US and the Europeans to negotiate with China and Russia one a one on one basis.

NATO was obsolete when the Soviet Union fell apart.

No, NATO will become obsolete when Russia stops invading her neighboring countries, violating the post-WWII peace order and the firmly established principle of the inviolability of the borders of sovereign nations.

When we can be sure that no further aggression or threat is emanating from Russia, then NATO will have served its purpose.

But as long as Russia continues pointing roughly 5,000 nuclear weapons at America's heartland, NATO remains a bulwark for America's survival.

Regards,
