On purpose? Why is his leg so high even after he got hit?

I don’t want to look at the video. Nonetheless, my Canadian wife tells me that it would be next to impossible to plan and execute that kind of attack successfully. It was a freak accident that happens once in a while.

I'm not sure it was intentional. It looks to me like the red player tries to check another white player, but misses and flails his leg up hitting Johnson, the white player who went down.

I have to agree.

Whatever it was, I cannot imagine how someone could do that intentionally.

Seems a little silly to imagine someone could, but...a lot of people who have never played hockey (much less some other sport) kind of let that concept fester in their minds.

After watching your short loop over and over

I think you are right

If you watch the video you’ll see what looks like a player intentionally lifting his leg to chest height to kick an opponent with his skate.

Instead of the cheat, he caught the neck. He probably didn’t intend death but he did want to inflict pain.

Skate blades are razor sharp.

At the least he should get a lifetime suspension from any level or organized hockey.

I am shocked at these comments.

This is not even a close call to me. It was an intentional high kick. This guy has the most penalty minutes in the league and is a well known thug. His history of on ice thuggery is well known.

He belongs in jail and on trial for manslaughter.

There’s a reason that hockey official have been cracking down on players leaving their feet when making a hit but this takes it to a whole new level.

I watched a lot of NHL hockey back in the '70s, including the Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, and Dave Schulz (enforcer) on the Los Angeles Kings. I also watched Islanders and Rangers, but the Islanders were skill-based, and the Rangers were simply hapless. That was the Golden Age of NHL fighting. I never heard of trying to kick someone in the chest with a skate. Yikes.

As someone that played hockey, if you miss a check you go onto your knees and then step up again. This guy was aiming for Johnson. If you see a clearer vid, he actually shoves his skate hard when he first makes contact.

Did something happen between the two earlier in the game that he'd try to get a little 'payback' for?

Unfortunately, the videos I can find are clearer than the gif I created, but still aren't that clear.

The lifted skate looks definitely suspect. At the very least it’s worth investigating.

I know of two other incidents like that but the player was able to be saved.

But slice the jugular, which can happen, and you don't have long.

While I doubt the killing the guy was the intent, the intent was definitely to harm, so I agree, he should be charged with manslaughter at the very least.

Agree with you 100%

That is why I didn’t say murder. But it looks quite definitely like manslaughter.

Intentional or not, it always has seemed to me that this type of injury is somewhat inevitable on random basis. The razor sharp blades are typically down closer to the ice but during a body check, the skates can come well up off the ice... and if another player just happens to be skating by, contact can inadvertently be made. Given enough games and enough body checks, probability suggests that eventually someone will be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I watched repeatedly in slow mo, the other guy’s foot clips Johnson twice, once in the neck, and then on the side of the head. Many people have stated the physics of the leg thrust and height are not possible without intent.

It bothers me that there seemed to be no medical personnel close by to rush over, keep Johnson still, and apply pressure at the very least. I unfortunately saw the video and it’s haunting.

I don’t see how anybody who’s watched the video in slow motion can come to any other conclusion :(

I so want to say something else but it’s probably not PC enough even for this board.
