Want to achieve your goals? Get angry, say researchers
Medical Xpress / American Psychological Association / Journal of Personality and Social Psychology ^ | Oct. 30, 2023 | Heather Lench et al

While often perceived as a negative emotion, anger can also be a powerful motivator for people to achieve challenging goals in their lives, according to research.

"People often believe that a state of happiness is ideal," said Heather Lench, Ph.D. "Previous research suggests that a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, result in the best outcomes."

To better understand the role of anger in achieving goals, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving more than 1,000 participants and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. In each experiment, researchers elicited either an emotional response (such as anger, amusement, desire or sadness) or a neutral emotional state, and then presented participants with a challenging goal.

In one experiment, participants were shown visuals designed to elicit specific emotional or neutral responses and then asked to solve a series of word puzzles. In another, the goal was to attain high scores on a skiing video game, with one game that involved challenging play (avoiding flags on a slalom course) and one easier game that involved only a jump.

Across all the experiments, anger improved people's ability to reach their goals compared with a neutral condition in a variety of challenging situations. In some cases, it was associated with increased scores or shorter response times. In one experiment, it also increased cheating to achieve a better outcome.

The researchers also analyzed data from a series of surveys collected during the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections. Survey participants who indicated they would be angry if their candidate did not win were more likely to vote in the election.

The effects of anger in spurring people to reach for and frequently achieve their goals were specific to situations where the goals were more challenging, according to Lench.

Oh, great. My cat, Mr. Whiskers, saw the title before I could close the window.

I’d like to say more, but I’ve got to go shopping. I’ve got a list of cat treats that have to be purchased RIGHT NOW.

Be angry and sin not.

In other words it is fine to be angry as long as you do not allow it to lead you into doing things that are sinful.

Let not the sun go down on your wrath.

At the end of the day seek calm. Does that mean you can not pick up the anger tomorrow? Of course not. But do not take your anger home and let it mar the peace of your home, your enjoyment of your family and your sleep at night.

They’ve obviously angered President Trump - he does not want to lose and he’s working his butt off to prevail. I couldn’t admire him more for his anger at injustice.

I've been say that for a couple of years now..

"We The People" need desperately to get a severe case of the jaws and have a genuine CALL TO ARMS.!!

We need like ten thousand American men show up at the main entries on the southern border and SHUT-IT-DOWN..!

He’s right. You should be angry at yourself everytime you start falling behind your goals.

Searching for: is anger a masculine emotion?

Anger is a basic human emotion that can be experienced by anyone, regardless of gender 1. However, the expression of anger can differ between men and women 1. Men are often conditioned to believe that they need to express their anger in more direct ways, such as through outward aggression 12. On the other hand, women are often conditioned to believe that they need to play the role of peacemaker and avoid conflict 1. This can lead to women expressing anger in more indirect ways, such as through passive-aggressive behavior 1.

It is important to note that while anger is not a masculine emotion, it is often depicted as such in society. Men are often thought of as angrier than women, and anger expressed by men is generally viewed as more socially acceptable than anger expressed by women 134. This can lead to men feeling more comfortable expressing their anger in public and women feeling more comfortable expressing their anger in private 1.

I hope this helps clarify your question. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Not in scripture. And the kind of advice that leaves people frustrated because there are some problems you can not solve by the end of the day. In fact most problems you can not solve by the end of the day.

You can only put them down and then take the burdens the next day.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?" Luke 14:28
