Maybe they should have told the perp that stealing from a store wasn’t worth their life.
Maybe put the responsibility for the thug, back on the thug.

There is a place on a rural road with a tall ramshackle wood fence around it so you can’t see anything. On a 4’x8’ piece of plywood is scrawled with spray paint: “Nothing back here is worth your life.”
Of course I do not under these people who go around "pulling pranks" (usually crimes but sometimes just being supremely annoying) and then act surprised when their victim responds violently. What did they expect to happen?
People are walking around dealing with a bunch of heavy stuff that you have no concept of so just leave them be.
