Roseville, Calif.- It’s no secret that sedan sales are sliding in the wrong direction. So, why did Toyota get rid of the Avalon sedan and quickly replace it with another sedan?
For the record, the Japanese automaker says the 2023 Toyota Crown is not a replacement for the Avalon, which debuted nearly 30 years ago. Discontinued after its 2022 version, the Avalon was a roomy, premium sedan that never quite found a niche.
It’s easy to figure out why Toyota shelved the Avalon – lack of sales. It hit rock bottom last year with all-time low of 12,215. And the two previous years, sales were under 20,000. The Avalon never really caught on; it’s highest sales year (95,318) came 17 years ago. What makes sense here is that even though the Avalon was a premium sedan, if people wanted an upscale sedan, they could purchase a Lexus.

cousin has a Crown. Looks ok to me, but I would never buy a 1st year car model.
Crown has been around for years
Avalon was an upgraded Camry, like Lexus GX is an upgraded 4Runner
Same thing. Different name?
Huh?? I’ve never seen or heard of one before.
“Standard driver safety assistance features include forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and park assist.”
i’m too old to learn how to use all of that krap ...
Price estimate: $39,950 to $52,400. Um, no thanks
There is a youtube video of a Lexus ES300 2003, with 596,000 miles on it.
Hard to argue with Toyota.
Avalon had a great run. Nice car.
I can attest to that. We’ve had a Toyota Avalon since the day we purchased it in 2008 (brand new). Finer car never made. We have only 50 thousand miles on it because we drove our 2004 Tundra for so many years which is another fine Toyota product. Spit on replacing the Avalon......;(
Crown has a taller roof and higher seating position. Easier to get in and out of, targeted at seniors.
Don’t forget the sneeze-through wind vents and the lush, wine-filled interior.
Ford needs to bring back the “Crown Vic”
You could spot the unmarked cruisers a mile away!
I liked the Avalon as well.
The Crown debuted in Japan in 1979 .
We have a 2007 Avalon my FIL gave my wife before his death. That was 5 years ago. It just now hit 80K miles. Sweet car, very comfortable, jumps when you mash the gas.
True - could also spot the marked patrol cars in your rear-view from the distinctive headlights.
This new Crown looks nothing like the older Japanese Crowns.
