New York’s Near Zombie Apocalypse

New York’s Near Zombie Apocalypse The city came close to an electric grid shutdown last winter.

...While gas supply fell, demand for electricity and heating surged, causing the pressure in interstate pipelines that supply downstate New York to plunge.

Allowing shale fracking in upstate New York might have mitigated the gas supply shortage at the margin, but former Gov. Andrew Cuomo blocked that. The climate lobby’s antidote is electric heat pumps, but that would have increased strain on an already stressed grid. If New York City relied mostly on electricity for heat, millions could have lost both power and heat during the arctic blast. How’s that for a zombie apocalypse?

The New York Independent System Operator reported this week that the Empire State would need to rely on power plants that can switch to burning oil during the winter into the next decade owing to gas shortages and lulls in offshore wind. Another problem: “EV charging load is higher on colder days due to reduced battery efficiency and reduced EV range in cold temperature.”

The top comment on the site is a nice summation.

"Most people don’t understand that if a large section of the grid was to fail, it is not easy to restart. It’s not like flipping a switch. And the more you lose the harder it is. I’d prefer a very reliable grid over a very green grid. Reliable and green are not possible unless you have nuke plants., which are green but not the right color green. "

New York hasn’t seen anything yet. For example, both the state and the city have laws requiring larger buildings (like apartments) to convert to electric heating. Some of these laws go into effect by 2030. Others by 2040.

There is no money to make these conversations. And there is no way to generate the needed increase in electricity. So will the “progressives” eventually see reality, and back down? Not likely.

Onward the Green Revolution!
(I guess.)

“If New York City relied mostly on electricity for heat, millions could have lost both power and heat during the arctic blast.”

Wait until busses, cars, firetrucks, ambulances, delivery vans, etc. all have to be electric.

We can sit here all day and explain why we cannot go all electric yet. We can point out that we haven’t built any nuclear power plants recently if that’s what they want.

It doesn’t matter because shutting it down has to be the point. It’s not stupidity.

You don’t need a degree in electrical engineering to figure this out.
