I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the six-hundred-fifty-third day of the war.
Day 653: Dec 08
Today, the biggest news comes from the Kherson region.
Here, Ukrainian activity started posing a significant threat to Russian objectives, which is why Russians gathered their forces and attempted to undercut Ukrainian forces from the southwest. According to Russian sources, Ukrainians conducted a series of offensive actions in the forest and started building formidable defenses. Ukrainian sources claimed that Ukrainians entrenched long ago, it’s just that recently, Russians discovered that Ukrainians were rapidly improving the captured trenches and fortifications, which made Russians quite concerned. In fact, Russian forces found it so difficult to dislodge Ukrainian marines from their positions that it was decided to use a new tactic.
Based on the geolocated footage, Russian forces conducted an attack from the western edge of the forest that is not under Ukrainian control and tried to advance toward the central part of the settlement, thereby slowly putting Ukrainian marines in the forest into a pocket. The main idea was not to establish firm control over this part of the settlement but rather create a threat of encirclement by undercutting Ukrainians from the southwest in hopes of forcing Ukrainians to retreat. If Ukrainians retreated, Russians would be able to assume control over these crucial strongpoints in the forest and use them against Ukrainians.
The operation started with an extensive bombardment to force Ukrainians who were holding positions inside the settlement to flee back to the islands, thereby opening the ground for the Russian attack. Unfortunately for Russians, this did not change the situation a lot because the settlement is very narrow, more precisely, around 350 meters, which is why Ukrainians do not need to maintain a permanent presence in the ruins in the first place. Some Russian analysts claimed that Ukrainians are located in the forest or dense tree areas immediately in front and behind the settlement, and the ground is under constant supervision of drones. So, when Russians launch an attack, Ukrainian drone pilots usually spot them on the approach, and Ukrainian marines advance inside the settlement to meet the Russian assault groups. That is why all engagements here are always characterized by both parties as meeting engagements.
And this is exactly what happened after the artillery preparation. The moment Russian forces started attempting to enter the village, Ukrainians were already ready to meet them. The footage shows that Russians tried to suppress Ukrainian fire to no avail, then made an attempt to change their positions but unsuccessfully. As a result, a lot of Russian soldiers died, while a few were seen fleeing the area. Russian sources released a video showing how a small group tried to outflank Ukrainians and fired with RPG, however, this did no help. Ukrainian fighters also previously released a video confirming that the forest line is also under tight control of Ukrainian snipers. The snipers were eliminating Russian reconnaissance units that were trying to identify Ukrainian firing points prior to the main attack.
Moreover, today, the commander of the famous Madiar’s Birds Detachment posted a video showing how his units demolished multiple pieces of heavy equipment in the forest that Russians were carefully preparing for the main assault. The first armored fighting vehicle was spotted by the drone with a thermal camera shortly after the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was promptly destroyed by the so-called Baba Yaga drones that carry at least 3 heavy mines. Madiar also said that his units are using drones to distantly mine certain areas, especially intersections. As a result, they managed to immobilize 3 more Russian armored fighting vehicles. Due to the limited visibility, they simply cannot notice mines on the corners and are easily trapped. As the vehicles cannot be evacuated quickly, Ukrainians usually have more than enough time to send Baba Yagas to finish the job. Because Russians were preparing to use these vehicles for an assault, they were fully loaded with ammo, which resulted in a powerful detonation that tore the vehicles to pieces.

Day 654 of the Russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine has begun.
The Russian federation continues to ignore the laws and customs of warfare, using the terror tactics, launching missile and air strikes, and firing multiple launch rocket systems not only at the military, but also at numerous civilian targets across Ukraine.
During the day of December 8, there were 95 combat engagements.
The enemy launched a total of 28 missile and 27 air strikes, 59 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed or damaged.
Air strikes hit Petropavlivka, Podoly, Ivanivka, Pershotravneve (Kharkiv oblast), Nadiya, Nevske, Serebryanske forestry (Luhansk oblast), Kolodyazi, Serebryanka, Chasiv Yar, Avdiyivka, and Lastochkyne (Donetsk oblast).
More than 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv oblasts came under artillery fire.
PIVNICH operational-strategic group, VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy troops conduct active subversive activities in order to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened axes. The adversary increases the density of minefields along the state border in Belgorod oblast (russia).
KHORTYTSIA operational-strategic group, KUPYANSK AXIS: Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 enemy attacks in the vicinities of Synkivka northeast of Petropavlivka and Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 1 enemy attack in the vicinity of Spirne (Luhansk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian soldiers repelled 13 attacks of the enemy in the vicinities of Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, and Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast). The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue assault operations south of Bakhmut (Donetsk oblast), inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the enemy, and consolidate their new positions.
TAVRIA operational-strategic group, AVDIYIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy who keeps trying to encircle Avdiyivka. The Ukrainian soldiers are standing their ground as they inflict major losses on the enemy. The Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 35 attacks of the adversary in the areas east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiyivka, Tonenke, and Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Pobjeda, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The Ukrainian defenders repelled 24 attacks in that area.
SHAKHTARSKE and ZAPORIZHZHIAhzhia axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled all of the enemy attacks that were an attempt to regain the lost ground in the areas west of Verbove (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their active operations on Melitopol’ axis to inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, and exhaust the enemy all along the front line.
ODESA operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces maintain their positions held on the left bank of the Dnipro River, continue to conduct counter-battery fire, as they strike behind the enemy lines.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 6x concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, and 1 electronic warfare station of the adversary.
Also, the Ukrainian air defense forces and means destroyed 14 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles.

In addition to this huge reduction in income Expenditure is continuing to increase due to the investment in the War, which means that the Russian Economy is now incurring massive LOSSES. Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak met with the renowned human rights lawyer, civil liberties and child protection advocate, Director of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, Baroness Helena Kennedy KC, who is visiting Ukraine.
Helena Kennedy is the co-chair of the international high-level group of experts Bring Kids Back UA and arrived in Kyiv to participate in the first meeting of the International Coalition of Countries for the Return of Ukrainian Children.
Andriy Yermak thanked Baroness Kennedy for her visit and support of Ukraine’s efforts to return its underage citizens who were unlawfully deported and forcibly displaced by Russia.
“This is important for us. In my opinion, everything that the coalition works on together with our Bring Kids Back UA group is extremely important,” the head of the Office of the President said at the beginning of the meeting.
The participants emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to develop new effective mechanisms by the coalition and the group. It would significantly increase the number of children returned to Ukraine, according to Andriy Yermak and Baroness Helena Kennedy KC.
They drew attention to the importance of how international organizations perceive the issue of deported children and the steps that would contribute to their return.
The head of the Office of the President and Baroness Kennedy also discussed the involvement of representatives from different countries, and leaders, including religious leaders, in the effort to return children. Andriy Yermak expressed the belief that discussing this direction is crucial for achieving the result of returning children to their families and homeland.
“I fully support the involvement of various participants, especially representatives from the Global South as intermediaries or negotiation participants,” he said.
Baroness Kennedy informed about her meetings in Kyiv and her visit to Geneva, intended to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children. She emphasized the difficulty for children to live without parents, far from their relatives. She highlighted the importance of intensifying efforts to return as many children as possible to their families.
“I think you should seize this opportunity to try. Let’s see if we can achieve this great goal. We want to make efforts for about 500 children to be returned by Easter next year,” Helena Kennedy said.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Yulia Sokolovska participated in the International Conference “Freedom or Fear,” dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“While working on issues related to restoration of human capital due to war, the provision of basic services to citizens, and ensuring the rights of the affected, it is important to realize that we cannot fit war into the norms, tools of peacetime, or even into established customs and mechanisms that have formed after previous wars worldwide. We need to build new constructs using modern toolkits and ideas,” she said.
According to Yulia Sokolovska, people should feel that they are not alone, that there is a place for everyone in society, and that the state is working to compensate for their losses, physical, moral, or material constraints.
The Deputy Head of the Office of the President mentioned that legislative initiatives have already been developed regarding the creation of registers of harm to life and health caused by the Russian war to our citizens. Special attention has been given to the issue of children. Tools for assessing the needs of the affected, documenting each case, and providing support have been proposed. They also plan to create a centralized database of those affected by the aggressor state, accounting for losses to ensure compensation for damages caused by Russia to the country and each individual.
Yulia Sokolovska separately highlighted the role of civil society and international organizations in protecting human rights and restoring human capital. This includes expert assistance, advocacy, and meeting the needs of people.
The event was organized by the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in collaboration with the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, aiming to draw attention to modern challenges related to human rights and facilitate the exchange of experience and the development of new approaches for the recovery of the rights of the affected and the achievement of sustainable development goals.
