My understanding is the reason for this, was because he walked out into oncoming traffic and got his bell rang pretty good.

He forgot we drive on the “wrong” side of the road.

Very easy mistake to make. You don’t realize how much you just do things like look for oncoming traffic by instinct and over there, your instincts betray you. I nearly got turned into a hood ornament more than once.

I believe he was on Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side around 77th Street. Central Park would have been over on the left side. He got out of a taxicab and and started crossing over without looking - as in England they drive on the opposite side of road - guy that hit him eventually met Churchill at the Waldorf-Astoria to apologize and got some autographed books.

World history would have been changed had the accident been fatal.

At least Churchill was able to parlay his misfortune into getting a steady supply of legal liquor in Prohibition-era America.

Though we all know Churchill would have gotten his drink one way or another. Even then, he was well connected.

That almost happened to me when crossing a street in London.
