That sounds very nice. I read about a house in my area that is so efficient that the person who owns it only needs a small room heater for the room he’s in. He made use of the land and he planted some deciduous trees, for shade against the sun in summer and allows heat through during the winter. He also connected his house to a greenhouse that allows the heat to flow into the house.
One of our heirs is a construction project manager, and after we decided to age in place in our current home about a decade ago.
He, our contractor, my wife a retired RN, and me the bill payer. Did some basic things focusing on our comfort as 70/80 year Senior citizens and keeping future PG&E costs down.
They/we took advantage of the winter sun and summer sun to minimize our PG&E bill and keep us comfortable.
Yes.
We’re currently starting to build a house. Windows will be 14 inches wide and 36 inches tall. Not many of them.
Most people put in big windows and then cover them in drapes. Sure you can let in sunlight and a little warmth but there is a net loss on cold coming through the windows.
With LED’s providing light compared to the old days of kerosene lanterns why bother with a heat losing hole in your house? My shop is 50’X 60’ and no windows. There are 10 8 ft LEDs in there which is bright as daylight.
Some zoning areas mandate a window big enough to get out of. in case of fire. For some of us that would have to be a BIG window. Which makes a nice entrance for bag guys.
You can build a house with dinky windows.
Then, when you want to sell it you can cut out and install large windows.
Because only Jeff Dahmer loves little windows.
You need a bif picture window. You will be happier letting the sunshine in.
Lots of windows

So much work.
Just out of curiosity, is this because you have seen the local surveillance?
No. Not because of surveillance. When I drew my house out on a napkin, I originally had a person walk through the front door into a sideways hallway that would connect with a home office on the right and, on the left, I wanted the place to hang your jackets on the wall and a shoe rack for your shoes and boots. At the end was a small closet where you would keep your rake and shovel and whatever else you would use to maintain your front lawn, except for the lawn mower of course.
I then realized that a picture would be pretty useless with this design, so I decided to create a camera-projector system, where the camera would be outside and the projector would be inside shining on a prepared wall whatever the camera sees and that would like the picture window.
