Not quite everyone. At least one person who actually knew the VonTrapps walked out of the theatre because the film reversed personalities—Maria was actually a battle-axe and the Captain a soft touch.
Creative license, and it worked. Lord of the Rings films made HUGE changes to many characters, and the story itself, in most cases for the better (such a Aragorn, who is 10x better than the book).
