As an amateur astronomer for most of my life, I was thinking “well, maybe it’s a star or planet close to the horizon suffering from atmospheric distortion, or a really bright star seen through a turbulent atmosphere which could cause that kind of distortion”, but after seeing the photo, I haven’t got the slightest idea.
It’s weird. Good on the photographer for getting the picture, but a video would’ve been even better.

The Air Force rule is that if you see a UFO cover your eyes and hope it goes away.

Chromatic aberration. Probably an inexpensive Chinese lens

It could be bad optics, but the Chinese are making much better ones these days. Can’t rule it out, though.
I wish the photographer would’ve taken a video, we could examine how the image moves around.

“It was around evening just as the sun dipped below the horizon,’ Zeigler said, adding that “I noticed some colorful shimmering and took out my 70-200 MM lens and shot this.”
It could be a sun dog, can’t rule it out, I guess.
Knowing what the camera settings were, and what the telephoto lens was set at would be helpful.

Lots of them are really good given the low cost but susceptibility to purplish fringing isn’t uncommon, especially with wide open aperture settings like you might be using at night. IMO the purple color in the image is a tell that it’s an optical artifact. Of course it can happen even with really good lenses too. Agree that seeing some video would tell a lot.

RE: Scully and Mulder....
An amazing fact-—I never saw even one episode of the show but have every Ancient Aliens on dvd and have read dozens of books on the related topics. Go figure.
My very first magazine/book on the topic bought at age 10:

Note the guy’s extreme crewcut in photo.

The photo was apparently taken by Dietrich Zeigler, a photographer based in Chicago, who shared his findings with the Daily Mail.More likely, he sold "his findings" to the Daily Mail.
