Russia’s electronic warfare tactics are helping it turn the tide against Ukraine
Telegraph ^ | 12/27/2023 | Joe Barnes

At first, Ukraine noticed its GPS-guided 155mm Excalibur artillery shells suddenly started veering off target.

Then rockets fired with Himars, which Kyiv once boasted had “scalpel-like” accuracy, began missing their targets. In some areas, they almost always missed.

The same happened to JDAM guided bombs supplied to Ukraine’s air force by the United States. Frantic investigation eventually discovered they had all fallen victim to a new threat – Russian jamming.

Moscow has quietly developed a knack for taking out some of Ukraine’s most prized missiles and rockets. It is a rare but crucial example of Russian technological advantage in a war that has been slowly tipping in Moscow’s favour.

Along almost the entirety of the front lines, an invisible wall of electromagnetic pulses now stretches like a shield.

An elaborate network of radio, infrared and radar signals hurled into the skies over the battlefield provides Russian forces with unprecedented protections in some areas.

‘Their electronic warfare is better than ours’ And it’s not just Ukrainian missiles that are now failing to reach their targets. Perhaps more significant is Russia’s ability to counter the array of cheap, sometimes off-the-shelf, drones upon which Ukraine has become reliant for reconnaissance and long-range strikes.

Ukrainians know they are now at a disadvantage.

One front-line soldier, whose 120mm mortar unit regularly uses Chinese-made Mavic drones to spot targets, told The Telegraph: “They’ve always had good electronic warfare since the start of the full-scale invasion. But now it is better than us.”

Another person with knowledge of the front lines said: “It’s getting pretty intensive but nothing high-tech, just the same Russian stuff – power in quantity not quality.”

“It remains a major problem along the front,” Andrey Liscovich, of the Ukraine Defence Fund, recently told the Geopolitics Decanted podcast.

A few here will predictably label this propaganda.

I call it 'balance'.

NeoCon narrative managers are laying the groundwork for the end of Ukraine, as their prior narratives are shown to have been BS.

How can this be?
Because of sanctions Russia is living back in the Stone Age
If fact it’s so bad that they are using shovels as weapons ( actual real Media reports from last summer)

Another example of how our military has been focusing on DEI and ESG and removing patriots from their ranks at every level. We’re so far behind.

Doesn't always seem to work though... One cruise missile worth a million or so, took out this ship which was carrying 4,400 artillery shells and 280 rockets... A pretty good 'bang' for the buck.

In 1951, Will Herberg, an American Jewish philosopher and sociologist of religion, published “Judaism and Modern Man.” He coined the phrase “cut flower culture” to describe the spiritual rootlessness of modern European and American societies.

He said, “The attempt made in recent decades by secularist thinkers to disengage the moral principles of western civilization from their scripturally based religious context, in the assurance that they could live a life of their own as ‘humanistic’ ethics, has resulted in our ‘cut flower culture.’ Cut flowers retain their original beauty and fragrance, but only so long as they retain the vitality that they have drawn from their now-severed roots, after that is exhausted, they wither and die. So it is with freedom, brotherhood, justice, and personal integrity – the values that form the moral foundation of our civilization. Without the life-giving power of the faith out of which they have sprung, they possess neither meaning nor vitality.”

I would say the same goes for military might and technological advantages. Our military and technology are still towards the top, but as the things that made them great, are replaced by inferior systems and cultures, these will eventually fall behind other world powers. We’re probably part way there.

In that “shovel” story the reserve unit had no or little artillery support and were forced to assault a “concrete strong point armed with only ‘firearms and shovels’”.

That would be the famous shovel Russians use for close combat.

Just the fact that our military even tried using GPS weapons shows the ABSOLUTE IDIOTS that run the Western militaries, particularly the US military.

It was ABSOLUTE INSANITY to let the Neocons start the war in Ukraine and then make our military look like ABSOLUTE IDIOTS trying to fight a first-rate power with weapons that only work against Third World countries (barely).

This article is likely mostly bogus.

GPS is a spread spectrum signal and it has an encrypted mode. It is nearly impossible to jam because the antennae are hemispheric (they point up, not down, and they cycle among multiple when they are on rotating shells) which means raw, brute strength jamming at the very wide bandwidth GPS downlink is hugely difficult. Trying to penetrate the encryption to lessen the amount of jamming power required is similarly unlikely, since the sequence cycles frequently.

Beyond that, GPS is merely one part of the navigation solution of ordinance. Inertial guidance (3 axis accelerometers and 3 axis ring laser gyro) blended into a computer with GPS will take over the guidance when GPS results are declared by the software to be invalid. Invalid is defined as differing from inertial by some magnitude. When it happens, inertial is the default and it’s pretty accurate.

So this is all bogus. You can’t jam inertial.

You could EMP it, which in traditional thought requires a nuclear explosion’s level of power. If the Russians have a localized, pointable, somehow portable power level sufficient EMP capability . . . we might as well surrender rather than lose our cities, because none of our weapons will reach the target and we have no deterrent.

I hope lots of Russian soldiers die trying to occupy Ukraine.

I hope the Russo-files at FR start cheering for human freedom.
