Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has been in the hospital since Monday, after complications from a recent elective medical procedure, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The real story here is that the Deputy Defense Secretary was prepared to act in his place this week and that Austin was expected to return to full duties today.
In other words the US Secretary of Defense was incapacitated this week.
