Kansas City Chiefs and Royals say they’ll stay in Jackson County if voters pass stadium sales tax

The Jackson County Legislature must decide by January 23 if it will put a measure before voters in the April election that would renew the 3/8-cents sales tax, which helps fund both Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums. If voters pass the measure, the Chiefs and Royals say they'll commit to staying in Kansas City.

Following months of speculation over where the Kansas City Royals will build a new ballpark — and concerns from legislators that the Royals and Chiefs may be courted across state lines — both teams announced Friday that they will commit to staying in Jackson County if voters extend the current stadiums sales tax.

“The Chiefs and the Royals have partnered with Jackson County for 50 years in a partnership that has worked well for all constituents,” the joint statement reads.

Currently, both Kauffman and Arrowhead Stadiums benefit from a Jackson County 3/8-cents sales tax, to the tune of millions of dollars per year. At the center of the discussion is whether to extend that sales tax for another 40 years.

However, talks around the proposed new baseball stadium have been hampered by tensions between Kansas City and the Jackson County Legislature, with Mayor Quinton Lucas and others blaming County Executive Frank White for "bad faith" negotiations.

Sell the stadium and tax the proceeds.
I like it.

Personally, I’d like to see both move across the border to Kansas near the Kansas Speedway. It would make it easier for me to get to Royals’ games and in the off-chance that I might go someday, easier to get to a Chiefs’ game. I know that it is not one of the alternative sites but it is my wish.

So billionaires and millionaires are colluding with the government to loot billion$ from taxpayers? Sounds rather fascist to me.

The Big K is a great baseball stadium. My sister lives in KS and a couple of times a year I go up there to go to a game with her.

I think it’s time to create a special tax for teams that rob the public treasury to build their playpens.

unbelievable that these billionaires get citizens to pay for their stadiums and then have the audacity to want a special tax to further line their pockets!

Someone should run for mayor promising to use immenent domain to seize the stadiums and return them to the people who paid for them!

How about the players have a stake in the stadiums they play in instead of the spectators who are already paying to get into those places?

Letthem go. With the high overhead they’re just not worth it. The days of reasonable ticket prices are long gone thanks to swinish salaries and expensive dogs and beer.

They get away with it because if you say no to them, they'll just leave town and hit the road.

Yes, it’s a nice stadium, I’ve been there many times. Now if the Royals could only put together a major league quality team. Record in 2023: 56-106. Last place in their division again. Read that they actually signed some quality players during the off season. Maybe they can actually be a .500 ball club this year.

Beautiful stadium. No fans. There was a Hooters up the road. Truman Library nearby. Eisenhower Library far away. A good road trip destination for sports fans. The travel truck stop across the road was too dangerous to cross. Need to do it by car and after a few beers at the game/Hooters-not a good idea. Hooters has probably closed down by now. Hot women are harder to find these days.

Teams don’t rob the public treasury. Teams, and other big businesses, convince local officials to do it for them. This is how business is done in America now. Any multi-billion dollar company that wants a new facility starts the bidding at “how much land will you give us free with eminent domain”. And then things accelerate from there. Amazon, Toyota, Boeing, and sports teams. Nobody pays for their own buildings anymore.

Until 2015 when, due to increasing negative public reaction the league did not renew its status, the NFL was classifed by the IRS as tax-exempt.
