And how is the hydrogen generated? Through the large use of other forms of energy. Most hydrogen generation uses "hydrocarbon" energy in the moment. Some small attempts to use hydroelectric are also underway. But hydrogen generation is VERY energy demanding. So the "zero" marketing is just that.

It sounds like they only carry the hydrogen and the oxygen comes from the air. An internal combustion engine does the same thing, but more than oxygen anlways ends up getting involved. I would expect the same, here, unless the fuel-cell is, somehow, more selective.

Of course, this may all be moot, as they probably burn fossil fuels to create the hydrogen in the first place.

The article doesn’t get into the specifics of the engine. I am assuming it will be similar to the turbo prop (short distance) and turbo fan (long distance) except that the propeller or fan will be driven by an electric motor.

1 Megawatt equals 1341 horsepower. For an aircraft like a Boeing 777 with two GE 90-115B engines each engine produces roughly 23 Megawatt of power during cruise flight with a fully loaded aircraft. This is 30,843 horsepower.

Hydrogen does not occur in nature; hydrogen COMPOUNDS occur in nature. Energy must be expended to crack those compounds.

As usual, the question remains: what source of energy is used to crack out the hydrogen? Solar? Wind? You’re kidding, right?

They’re not making a hydrogen powered airplane, they’re making a coal/methane/nuclear powered airplane.
