As I noted earlier, I am a retired teacher (urban public schools). And at one time I would have argued against homeschooling. And that’s because public schools are a true melting pot. That is very necessary in a “diverse” country like ours.
I no longer argue against homeschooling, at least in urban areas. Urban public schools are absolutely beyond saving. There’s not even a 1% chance of reform there. I now tell folks not to send their kids to an urban public school. Homeschool, or pick a good charter or private school. Or move.
And I tell young people studying to be a teacher not to apply to an urban public school. Don’t believe their recruiting propaganda. Just walk away.
Side note: The real victims in all this are the poor kids who have no choice but to go to a city public school. Even in my worst classes most of my students were okay. They are the real victims.
