I understand your point, that is what happened to the Red Delicious. It used to be very tasty as well as pretty but they started breeding for looks rather then taste and now it is considered a garbage apple. Cheapest one in the market. But Honey Crisps and Opals will cost 75 to 100 percent more and people will happily pay it.

The newer ones, though. N UGH. Mushy, mealy, and tasteless.

However they do work well with other varieties to create new one, like Galas, which I hear a a cross using Red Delicious.

Ground equipment is is already cutting into the agplane jobs, by making extra high clearance rigs with ever wider spray booms. A farmer (that I drive truck part-time for) in Lawrence county TN has bought a extra high clearance Hagie sprayer, and thinks he may rarely hire the agpilot from now on.
