Stacy Wakefield, the widow of former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim, died Wednesday.

Tim, notorious for his knuckleball during his 19-year career, died in October after a battle with brain cancer. Stacy, too, was battling cancer.

"It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts," the Wakefield family said in a statement. "She was surrounded by her family and dear friends, as well as her wonderful caretakers and nurses. The loss is unimaginable, especially in the wake of losing Tim just under five months ago. Our hearts are beyond broken.

"We will remember Stacy as a strong, loving, thoughtful and kind person, who was as down-to-earth as they come. We feel so lucky to have had her in our lives, and we take comfort in the fact that she will be reunited with Tim, the love of her life.

"We would like to thank all of Stacy's doctors, nurses and caretakers who helped her from diagnosis to today โ€“ we are eternally grateful for your unmatched care and support. And to all of you who have sent well wishes over these last several months, we truly appreciate your kindness."

Stacy and Tim were married from 2002 until his passing. They had two children together.

The news of Tim Wakefield's passing was posted on FR in October. He was 57. His wife was 52.

It turns out, they both had cancer at the same time - he had brain cancer, and she had pancreatic cancer. Now, they've died only five months apart. Their kids are only (I think) maybe 19 and 20.

Hopefully they have trusted family and did estate planning.

I already did mine. We have two more steps to go...my son graduates in May and we are selling the house after my middle child completes his Associates in December.

Then I can pass knowing I did my best for them.

“It turns out, they both had cancer at the same time”

A broken heart is a terrible, deadly malady. Same type thing happens much more frequently then realized generally. Steve Reeves and his wife for example. RIP.

There are no words for this. Tim was a wonderful human being. Apparently his wife was the same. May God Bless those two children. They obviously have much to grieve about.

Tim was one of the good guys in MLB.

Started out as an outfielder but wasn't a very good hitter, started experimenting with a knuckleball and the rest is history.

Sad footnote. The founder of the Paper Store chain, with their original store in Maynard, Massachusetts, when DEC was a powerhouse, and his wife, both had cancer at the same time. Both died on the same day in Emerson Hospital, in Concord, on the same day. I am told by people who were closer to them than I am, that the survivor never knew of the other’s death.

Agree 100%

A Braves fan here. I remember when he shut us down in the NLCS. I was intrigued by his story of the knuckleball saving his career and followed and cheered for him from then on.

For both he and Stacy to battle cancer simultaneously makes me wonder if there were environmental factors.

That should unburden you.

Donโ€™t go dying now though.
