After the success of the Joe Flacco experiment, look for Sean Payton to get Drew Brees off the couch for a bargain $20 million.

There’s one very good reason to do it:
That’s how the game works

All sports rules are innately arbitrary. Why 100 yards? Why 4 plays to make 10 yards? Why 6 pts for a touchdown.

As for hockey the faceoff is part of the play, but there’s nothing going on with it. Not to the level of football. Nobody is moving around trying to get the other team to think they’re doing X.

I know my NFL rules just fine. Outside the 2 minute warning in the first half, and the last 5 minutes of the 2nd the only clock stoppage for out of bounds is until the ref spots the ball. Inside those windows it’s stopped until snap.

It’s not the same in baseball. Again there just isn’t as much going on. There’s just not enough people on the field, nor is the game complex enough for showing one play and doing another. No motion, no nickel packages, no big sets. It just doesn’t have that structure. I’m not saying one is better or worse, but it’s just a fact that the NFL is a battle style game, with all the same Xs and Os generals have been using for millennia and just like in a real battle controlling what you show the opponent and getting them to make decisions is part of the game.

The most you get in baseball is expected results. With this kind of batter and that kind of pitch if the batter gets a hit it will likely go this way so fielders shift.

Drew Brees didn’t have to retire and could have been getting that all along. Joe Flacco didn’t have that choice.

Predict is a strong word, but they do take various guesses. Remember the rule of 3 is “tell them what they’re going to see”. So when the announcer says “the defense is showing blitz” that’s a trying to tell them. When they say “this is probably 4 down territory so they don’t have to get all the yards on this play” that’s trying to tell them. When they say “the great part about 2nd and short is it opens up the playbook, this is a good time for play action”. Now some guys are really good at it, Romo straight up predicts plays.

When you look at how the rule is used in scripted TV you can see how pre-play announcing works with it. Like when Columbo gets halfway out the room and then turns around and says “there’s one more thing I want to ask” we know he’s going to ask the big question that blows the case open. Tell them what you’re going to show them. Then he asks the big question and maybe we cut to a glass or phone or whatever. Show them. Then he works on that answer and starts putting it all together. Tell them what they just saw.

The Bronco’s have been a mess since they won the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks should have fired Pete Carroll and traded Russell at the same time.

Well, I guess Columbo would know since he caught General Manager Robert Culp when he murdered the team owner.

That’s a great episode. I just picked on Columbo because it gave the structure a catch phrase. And also a great show. But once you know what to look for it’s obvious in most dramas (except for the ones that avoid it, most of the prestige dramas). And then you watch football and you go “ohhh, it’s the same”.

It stopped being a sport when the big betting apps gained control and the refs followed along.
