The ones at Walmart are probably cultivated hybrids.

Growing these was one of my hobbies when I was a kid. I often wondered if they were obtained illegally. :)

had several of them a few years ago in Florida. they worked great for not just flys but also for the mosquitoes. they were outside under a covered porch so they did well....until SOMEBODY forgot to check their water. in my brilliance there was a decision to give then a little beer instead of water, you know...for the carbs. yeah....if you have Venus Flytraps Do NOT give them beer!

They’re easy enough to grow from seed.

The article is a little confusing. The only place they grow naturally is NC, but they’ve been naturalized in a few other places.
(It seems that vegetative propagation of one type or another is preferred, as it results in a genetically identical plant.)

Imagine if they could cross breed the Venus Fly Trap with say, a Cholla (jumping cactus). If you touch it, its barbed thorn arms would wrap around you and trap you in the middle of the plant, then poke you until your fluids drained out, feeding the plant.
Then we could plant hundreds of thousands of them in the desert along the southern border.

That’s where I got mine.
I started with one pot and am up to four now. They live on my porch until the first freeze, then I bring them in at night if it’s going to be below freezing.

My brother and I were standing on his front porch one evening when we noticed a scorpion scurrying across the concrete. We were both barefoot, so I poured a little beer on it, thinking that will slow him down.
The next morning, that scorpion was dead in the same spot, I don’t think he moved an inch.
We know beer kills Venus fly traps and scorpions. I’m sure it’s fine for people...
