Cheap energy has enabled the creation of a large middle class, and there are some people who hate the idea that some people, a lot of people, are able to work their way to a better life.
I actually think these people are Avatar dreamers stuck in the insane desire to have an idyllic world like that portrayed in James Cameron’s movies. IMO, the only cure for them is euthanasia.
Aside from his idiocy (the nagging question he can’t figure out, which at its core is utter hypocrisy of the left), I very much like his proposal.

For the masses, he is trying to explain envy, I believe. Envy is the basest of all sins, I expect, and defies logical understanding. If you could understand why a person would rather destroy something than have another person possess it, you could understand envy.
For the leadership, mankind is full of people who understand human psychology only enough to use it against others. It is their version of empathy. They play on this envy of the masses.
Neither group wants to work. They are perfect for each other. So, this situation is as old as Man.
Francis does ask, “Why not a tax?”, a few times. A tax would be too obvious to the masses. It does not appeal to their envy for them to realize they are paying for what they want.

Like the military during the Cold War, what angers the Left was NEVER the military itself, but rather that they didn’t control it back then, even during Democrat Administrations.
This should OBVIOUS now as the Leftists running the country are running around the world starting war after war, with the SAME MILITARY they voted, TIME AFTER TIME, to eliminate (or at least cripple). But not anymore!!! They are the BIGGEST fan of the military, even while they rot it out from the inside.
The petro industry represents liberty. The left hates that freedom.
Petroleum powers freedom. And it pollutes. So double whammy.
I use one simple question to determine if they are worthy. Ask them “where does electricity come from?”. If their answer is the wall plug, you have your answer!
The petro industry is funding a lot of these "protesters". The industry insiders don't want their monopolies disrupted by new producers. The petro cartel can't come right out and say it so they instead fund "protesters" to stop any expansion of "fossil" fuel production.
