It was over selection for longer storage for supermarkets that doomed them. Then Fuji and HoneyCrisp came along.
I’ve always wondered what the pre supermarket era Red Delicious tasted like. I wonder if anyone has any of the original cultivars on an old farm somewhere.

I saw a thread a couple weeks ago of a lemon that was still intact selling at an antique auctionIn the hundred thousands of dollars. Said to be over 2000 years old. My guess was whoever was going to buy it was going to attempt to germinate the seeds. Talk about heirloom.
