Look it up. Many people believe the league didn't want to officially suspend him, so they allowed him to retire for 2 years. Do you think the NBA wanted to have to suspend its number one player?

There is some evidence to back it up. For example, Jordan was called to stand in a trial in 1992 where he admitted that he paid $57,000 to a cocaine dealer because of Bets he lost. Another golfer said that Jordan owed him 1.25 million then eventually he paid it back.
