A fine and detailed presentation at Cal Tech many years ago addressed the red shift and SETI, and came to quite the same conclusion. There is one bandwidth due to the red shift and gravitational bending in which “noise” is mostly absent, and any reasonably advanced species wishing to send a receivable message would do so. Silence in that bandwidth. But the other imagination-sparking theories are so tasty and exciting.... We are very, very likely alone. On God's green and wonderful earth.

We’ve only been broadcasting for a century or so.

A civilization is even only a few thousand light-years away and answers, that’s multiple thousands of years. Will our civilization still be around to reply?

Probably alone? No, we absolutely ARE alone, to the extent that if intelligent, self-aware life exists elsewhere in the universe (which it almost certainly does), we will never know of its existence, or they of ours. The distances are simply too great.

The double problem with space aliens is first distance and second, time. The distances in space are ginormous, and not at all easy to travel.

However, the time problem is also daunting. That is, our galaxy is about 12-26 Billion years old. Lots of time there for intelligent species to evolve and collapse. There could have been thousands of such species. But only if they evolved *very* close to us, within the last 150 or so years ago, is there a chance we might meet.
